Six Cedars and Tail 1470 Memorial

Members of the 128th Air Refueling Wing, Milwaukee, Wisc., lowered the base's American flag here to half-staff Dec. 10, 2013, in remembrance of six unit members who died in a firey explosion of a KC-135 Stratotanker 20 years ago here. On Dec. 10, 1993 a KC-135 Stratotanker, tail number 1470, at the 128 ARW exploded due to a pump that produced a spark igniting fumes in a fuel cell of the aircraft, which killed Milwaukee-area residents, Master Sgt. Roy Starszak, 57; Master Sgt. James Schlicht, 41; Technical Sgt. James Russell, 33; Technical Sgt. Michael Heath, 32; Technical Sgt. Russell Shurr, 35; and Staff Sgt. Patrick Foran, 31. Milwaukee firefighters help bring in U.S. Airmen with the 128th Air Refueling Wing, Wisconsin Air National Guard who were participating in water survival training on Lake Michigan Aug. 8, 2013. The Aircrew Flight Equipment section of the 128 ARW conducted combat and water survival training for aircrew members with help from the Milwaukee Police Department and Milwaukee Fire Department.
